작년부터 알려진 인터넷을 기반으로 한 VOD 서비스인 NETFLIX라는 사이트가 있습니다.

국내 시장에 진출을 할 때부터 가격적인 부분이나 국내 컨텐츠 부족 등의 이유로 흥망에 많은 관심을 주기도 했지만, 전세계적인 공급망을 갖추고 있고 그 만큼 자본력이 큰 기업이였기에 국내 유무선 VOD 공급회사들이 긴장을 하고 있었던 사이트입니다.

필자도 국내에 처음 도입되던 시기, 배두나가 주연을 맡았던 NETFLIX 자체제작 “센스 8”이라는 시리즈를 보기 위해 가입을 했었는데요.

덕분에 그 동안 보지 못했던 미드를 수십 시간 보느라 시간가는 줄 몰랐습니다. 이런 NETFLIX가 얼마나 큰 공룡이라는 것을 짐작케 하는 것들이 있었는데요. 바로 자체 제작하는 컨텐츠에 헐리우드 Top Star들이 출연을 하고 극장 개봉을 하지 않고 자체 공급만으로도 먹고 살 수 있는 구조가 되어 있다는 것입니다.

뿐만 아니라 자체 제작한 영화를 영화관과 사이트에서 동시 개봉을 하기도 하는데요.

이들의 작품들이 우리가 기존에 경험했던 헐리우드 블록버스터나 괜찮은 영화와 질적으로 별반 다를 것이 없다는 것에 더욱 놀라울 따름입니다.

이번에 소개해 드릴 영화는 NETFLIX 자체 제작이면서 영화관에 동시 개봉한 “What Happen to Monday…?_월요일이 사라졌다…!”입니다.

1960년대 2차 세계대전 이후 베이비붐 세대들로 갑작스런 인구가 증가하게 되면서 식량부족으로 인한 인류의 폐망을 이야기 하는 학자들도 많았습니다.

그러나 지금 이런 이야기들을 듣는 젊은 세대들은 도대체 무슨 소리인가 하는 생각이 들텐데요. 기하급수적으로 늘어만 가는 인구로 인하여 식량의 생산력이 따라가지 못함에 따라 인류 생존에 문제가 생길 것이라는 예측을 했다는 것입니다.

그러나 현재 시점에 돌이켜 보면 과학기술의 발전이 그런 걱정을 어느정도 덜어주고 있었는데요.

한국에서도 산아제한정책을 펼쳐 자식을 하나만 두도록 유도하기도 했습니다. 그러나 요즘은 저출산이 문제되어 아이를 많이 나으라고 장려하는 추세인데요.

현재의 저출산의 문제는 단순한 식량문제를 넘어 그 이상의 사회적 비용을 가정이 감당하기 어려워 벌어지는 현상이 되었습니다.

이런 출산 등 인구정책과 식량 등의 자원문제는 시간이 지남에 따라 반복적인 부족과 초과로 인하여 몸살을 앓고 있는데요.

이번에 소개해 드릴 “월요일이 살아졌다.”의 경우도 증가하는 인구를 감당하지 못한 인류가 과학기술로도 그 해결책을 찾지 못해 강제적인 산아제한정책을 세계적으로 펼치게 되면서 벌어지는 비인간적인 방식과 일곱 쌍둥이가 살아 남기 위해 벌어지는 생존 투쟁…

그리고 일곱 쌍둥이 그 속에서도 나눌 수 없는 “자아”와 관련된 이야기를을 담고 있습니다.

한 가정에서 오직 한명의 자녀만을 출산하고 양육 할 수 있도록 제도화 되어 있는 상황에서 어느 가정에서 일곱 쌍둥이를 출산하게 됩니다.

일반적인 경우 한명을 제외한 나머지는 냉동수면실에 강제 수용되고 다음세대에 환경이 좋아지면 다시 해동시켜 주도록 하겠다는 것인데요.

이런 제도 속에서 일곱 쌍둥이의 할아버지는 자신의 손녀 모두를 살아갈 수 있도록 방법을 찾습니다. 바로 하루에 한명씩 똑같이 행동하며 외부에서 생활을 하고 집에서는 각자의 삶을 살도록 하는 겁니다.

월,화,수,목,금,토,일요일 일주일을 각 쌍둥이들이 하루씩 나누어 외부에서 생활을 할 수 있도록 평생 훈련을 하며 어느 하나라도 돌출된 행동을 하게 되면 모두의 삶에 위험을 초래하기 때문에 굉장히 강한 공동체 연대 의식을 가지고 책임있게 행동하여야 합니다.

그러나 그들도 사람이기에 각자가 바라는 생활과 행동 등이 다르며 어느 순간 다가오는 사랑의 향기에 취하기도 합니다.

“카렌 셋맨” 이라는 하나의 이름으로 일곱명이 한명을 연기하며 살아가는 가운데, 월요일을 담당한 “Monday(월요일)”이 사라지면서 남은 자매들이 살해 당하기도 하며 사라지기도 하는 가운데 “Monday(월요일)“을 찾기 위해 위험한 모험이 시작 됩니다.

결국 영화의 결말은 제도 속에 감추어진 비열한 행위와 일곱명이 하나의 자아를 나누어 가지며 생기게 된 현실적인 문제를 말해주고 있는데요.

영화를 보며 생각되는 것은 자연적 현상에 의한 문제를 인간의 생존본능과 살아가며 벌어지는 문제점을 해결 할 수 있는 인간의 능력을 결코 무시하면 안된다는 것이였습니다.

만약 영화 속에서 처럼 살아 갈 수 없는 아이 중 하나가 세상을 구할 수 있는 방법을 찾을 수 있는 바로 그 사람이라면 어떨까요?

미래에 대한 해결책을 과거의 경험만 가지고 있는 현재의 우리가 절대적으로 결정하고 변경 할 수 없도록 만든다면 그것이 다시 재앙을 만들어 오게 되는 것은 아닐는지 필자의 한마디를 남기면서….영화를 보시며 같이 생각해 보면 어떨까요?
