정말 멋지고 감동적인 영화 한 편은 남녀노소 불문하고 눈물짓게 만듭니다.

예고편만 보았을 때, 그 누구도 웃음을 기대하며 보고 싶었던,
예고편만 보았을 때, 그 누구도 상상하지 못했던 이야기와,
예고편만 보았을 때, 영어 사대주의라 잘못 생각 할 수 있는….
슬픈 우리의 현실임을 모르고 보게 되었습니다.

오늘 소개해 드릴 영화에 대해서 거창한 소개가 된 듯 하지만, 영화를 보고 받은 감동 그 자체를 그대로 표현했기에 이상 할 것이 없다고 생각됩니다.

I can speak 라는 제목과 나문희, 이제훈의 홍보 영상만 보아도 영화를 보는 내내 뭔가 재미나고 눈물 빼는 웃음을 선사 할 줄 알았는데요.

제목만 본다면 아주 오래전 장혁과 이나영의 “영어완전정복”이라는 영화가 생각나기도 하여 어설픈 영어 개그를 떠 올릴 수도 있습니다.

나옥분 할머니가 지독하게 자신의 주변일에 열정을 쏟고 영어를 배우고자 고집하는 모습을 다들 별난 사람이라 생각하게 만듭니다.

그러나 사람은 그 행동에 있어 저마다 이유가 있지만, 대부분의 사람들은 자신의 기준에서 벗어나는 행위를 보면 거부하기 마련 입니다.

지금도 많은 사람들이 취업과 직장, 학업을 위하여 영어책을 펼쳐두고 비싼 수강료를 들이며 토익,토플 공부에 매진하고 있으시죠?

꼭 그런 용도가 아니라도 생활영어 정도는 할 줄 알아야 할 것 같아 독학이나 인터넷 강의를 활용하기도 합니다.

정말 우리가 영어를 배워야 하는 이유가 무엇인지…그리고 그것을 어떻게 제대로 활용 하여야 하는지 이 글을 쓰는 필자는 적지 않은 나이에도 불구하고 정확하게 결론을 내리기가 참 힘듭니다.

민감하지 않을 수 없는 “일본군 위안부” 문제를 끄집어 내기 위해….

힘 있는 나라와 전세계와의 소통을 위하여 어쩔 수 없이 배우고 또 그것을 할 줄 모르기에 억울하게 외면당하고 묻혀 버릴 수 있는 힘의 구도 속에서….

I can speak 는 단순한 코믹과 감동의 드라마의 범주를 넘어서 대한민국이 5천년 역사를 가지고 지내오면서 그때나 지금이나 겪고 있는 모습을 잘 그려냈다고 판단 됩니다.

훌륭한 “한글”이라는 문자와 자국의 언어를 분명 가지고 있지만,

지금의 세계와의 소통을 위해서는 영어만은 필수이고 모든 힘은 영어에서 나온다고 보여지는 현실 앞에….

영어를 할 줄 안다는 것은 큰 무기이면서 또 한편으로 힘없는 나라의 비애를 적나라하게 드러내고 있는 것이 아닌가 합니다.

물론 극적인 요소를 위해 영어에 대한 무언가 임팩트를 주어야 하지만,

우리나라 대통령까지도 미국의 의회 연설에서 영어로 하여야 미국뿐만이 아니라 자국민에게도 인정을 받을 수 있는 현실이……그 방법이 상대국을 위한 배려임을 알더라도…결국 잘 보이기 위한 하나의 수단임은 다들 아실거라 여겨집니다.

극중 나옥분 할머니는 산더미 같은 민원서류를 내보이며 공무원들을 들들 볶습니다.

영화 속 저 민원서류 뭉치들은 단순한 골치거리가 아니라, 우리가 이미 오래 전에 해결 했어야 하는 내부적인 문제를 아직도 회피하고 있는 현실을 보여주는 듯 합니다.

내부적 갈등의 해결이 없이 어떤 문제의 해결도 제대로 되지 않는 다는  필자 나름대로의 해석을 하게 되었습니다.

제38회 청룡영화제에서 나문희씨는 데뷔 56년만에 첫 여우주연상을 수상하는 영광을 얻었으며,  같은 날 우리의 위안부 할머니들은  정의기억재단으로부터 “여성인권상”을 받으셨습니다.

단지 역사적 진실 앞에서 “I am sorry…!”라는 이 짧은 문장의 진심어린 사과만 있더라도 모든 것이 해결 될 것으로 보이지만, 진실을 인정하는 것이 자신의 이익을 해친다고 생각하는 일본정부에 심히 불편한 마음 가질 수 밖에 없습니다.

영어가 안된다면 죄송합니다든 “스미마셍(すみません)” 이든 “고멘나사이(ごめんなさい)” 이든 어떤 표현이든 상관이 없을 듯 합니다.

앞으로도 역사적 진실을 밝히며 대한민국 국민들 조차도 기억에서 잊고 있는 많은 내/외부적인 문제들을 훌륭한 영화를 통하여 잘 전달 되었으면 합니다.

힘 없던 나라의 딸로 태어나 희생 당하고 그 조차도 말 못하고 지금까지 고통스럽게  살아오신 위안부 피해자 모든 분들게 국민의 한 사람으로서 아직까지 소명을 다 하지 못하고 살아가는 것 같아 부끄러움 감출길 없으며, 꼭 오래 살아남아 진실의 승리를 두 눈으로 직접 확인 하시라 응원합니다.
