더 프로데터

이중턱에 거구이면서 엄청난 힘과 제대로 된 기술과 무기도 갖추고 있는 외계 생명체

어떤 목적 없이 타행성의 생명체들을 사냥감으로 여기고 사냥을 즐기는 것으로 여겨졌던 그 외계 생명체인 “프로데터”는 우주의 여러 생명체들의 DNA를 수집하여 자신들의 진화의 도구로 사용하게 된다는 사실이 이 번 영화 “더 프로데터”에서 새롭게 알려지게 됩니다.

화려한 액션과 잔인함 그리고 새로운 이야기 전개로 마케팅일 펼쳐지고 있는 “더 프로데터”는 그 동안 보여줬던 프로데터의 후속작들이 “전편보다 나은 후속작은 없다”는 말이 절로 생각나독 했던 것처럼, 영화의 작품성면에서는 후한 점수를 주기는 힘들 것으로 보입니다.

그러나 영화를 다 보고나면 이 영화가 2시간짜리 였다는 사실이 믿기지 않게 시간이 빨리 지나간 것처럼 느껴집니다.

다시 말하자면 작품성을 논할 필요는 없으나 극장 의자에 앉아 스크린을 보는 동안 뻔한 액션일 것 같지만, 그리고 뻔한 내용일 것 같지만 쉬지 않고 터지는 액션과 살짝 숨겨둔 웃음 코드는 영화를 보면서 나쁘지 않다는 생각이 들도록 만듭니다.

1987년 아놀드 슈왈제네거 주연의 프로데터가 처음 나왔을 당시 새로운 우주 악당의 출연과 특공대 조차도 두려움을 떨게 하는 괴력 그리고 앞선 기술력을 바탕으로 선보이는 투명술과 무기의 사용은 신선한 자극을 주었습니다.

프로데터1의 경우 앞서 말한 액션이나 무기의 사용보다, 일당백의 그린베레 특공대들을 상대로 하나씩 사냥하듯 쫓아가게 되고 눈에 보이지 않는 귀신과 같은 존재가 다가오며 죽음을 기다리게 되는 각 개인의 당황스러운 상황을 보면서 그 존재에 대한 두려움이 더 컸던 것으로 보입니다.

숨어도 숨길 수 없으며 싸워도 이길 수 없을 것 같은 존재.

그러나 이런 위기에서도 아놀드 슈왈제네거는 상대방의 약점을 파악하여 싸움을 승리로 이끌게 되지만 폭발과 함께 사라지면서 모든 것이 비밀에 부쳐지는 듯 보였는데요.

이런 프로데터는 단지 하나의 이야기에 머무리지 않고 도심에 출현하는 2편이 만들어지고 또 에일리언과 함께 여러 속편들에 등장하기에 이릅니다.

이 번 “더 프로데터”는 극중의 잔인한 장면이 너무 많아 “청소년관람불가“ 등급으로 상영되고 있습니다.

그 만큼 잔인한 상황전개를 필요로 하는지에 대한 의구심도 들지만, 거구의 힘쎈 외계생명체를 상대하는 인간의 힘이 얼마나 보잘 것 없는지 제대로 보여주기 위해서였다면 이해 못 할 바도 아닐 것입니다.

오래전 기억 흐릿한 곳에 자리 잡고 있는, 두려움을 몰고 왔다가 의구심을 더 가지게 만들며 끝을 내던 “프로데터”가 “더 프로데터”라는 제목으로 다시 돌아와 새로운 볼거리를 제공하고 있는 가운데…관객들은 조금은 유치하다거나 기대이하라는 평가도 많지만, 그냥 그 시간 동안 즐기기에 충분하다고 평가하는 관객들도 많은 것으로 보입니다.

시간을 보내기만 하면 괜찮다거나 과거의 향수를 느끼고 싶다면 희안하게 생긴 이중턱의 사냥꾼 프로데터로 한바탕 액션 잔치를 벌리는 “더 프로데터”도 괜찮을 것으로 판단됩니다.

프로데터에 대해 잘 모르는 경우 1987년 상영한 프로데터1과 1997년 프로데터2를 먼저 보고 관람하시는 것이 감상에 훨씬 더 큰 재미를 줄 것입니다. 나머지 속편들과는 그 이야기가 사뭇 다르게 흘러가니 이점도 관람의 한 포인트가 될 것입니다.
