야심한 밤 조용한 한 마을에서 정적을 깨는 유리창 깨지는 소리와 함께 살인 사건이 발생합니다.
유일한 목격자는 그 광경을 멀지만 정면에서 보게 된 한 여학생(지우) 뿐.
 
결정적인 증인이며 모든 열쇠를 쥐고 있는 지우는 다른 친구들과 달리 ‘자폐증’을 앓고 있습니다.
 
그렇기 때문에 그녀의 진술이 증명력을 가진 증거가 될 수도 있고 아무것도 되지 않을 수 있는 상황에서 ….
 
피해자의 가정부가 살인의 누명을 쓰고 처벌을 받기를 기다리고 있습니다.
 
로펌의 이미지 개선을 위해 이 번 사건을 국선변론하게 된 양순호(정우성 분) 변호사는 자신이 변론하는 가정부의 무죄를 입증하기 위해 노력하는데요.
 
결정적인 것은 바로 임지우(김향기 분)의 증언을 어떻게 효력이 없게 만드느냐…그러기 위해 자폐증을 앓고 있는 지우를 자세히 알아가며 자폐라는 것에 대한 연구와 접근법을 배워 나갑니다.
 
현실에서도 마찬가지지만 영화속에서도 배우 정우성의 훤칠한 키는 어디 내세워도 눈에 너무 띄기도 하지만 무시할 수 없는 멋스럼이 그대로 드러나기에 보는 이로 하여금 하나의 작품을 보는 듯한 즐거움도 선사합니다.

그런 그의 모습과 함께 나즈막히 나레이션을 하는 듯한 일정한 톤의 대사 처리는 어느 평론에서는 자칫 지룸함이나 극적 긴장감을 노칠 수 있다고 하지만, 이 영화는 오히려 그런 배우 정우성의 대사처리가 극중 양순호 변호사의 쉽게 변할 수 없는 본연의 성격을 나타내주고 있으며 관객들로 하여금 양순호 변호사의 이야기가 더 신뢰가 가도록 만들기도 합니다.
 
어떤 연기를 하는 연기자를 보며 연기를 잘한다고 칭찬을 한다는 것은 단지 그가 연기를 하는 어떤 모습(그것이 사람일 수 있으며, 다른 무엇일 수 있습니다)에 보는 관객들이 빠져들게 만들었다는 것이 아닐까 합니다.
 
미디어를 통해 자폐증상이 어떤 것이라는 것, 그리고 뒤늦게 그들의 어떤 능력이 일반적인 사람들과 다르게 너무 발달하거나 하였기에 지금의 사회에 적응하기 힘들다는 정도는 알려져 있습니다.
 
극중 임지우를 연기한 배우 김향기의 연기는 보는 관객들이 빠져들기에 충분히 그 역할을 잘 소화해 내었다고 보여지며 같은 극장 안에서 영화를 본 다른 관객들의 영화가 끝난 뒤 이어지는 괜찮은 영화라는 평가가 모든 것을 대변해 주었습니다.

영화 ‘증인’은 보는 동안 지루함을 드러내지 않으면서 법정 드라마로서의 긴장감을 놓치지 않으려고 부단히 애를 쓴 흔적들도 보여주고 있었습니다.
 
법정 드라마에서 빠질 수 없는 증인을 심문하며 벌어지는 공격 방어는 거칠지 않으면서도 법에 대해 잘 몰라도 인간적으로 그러지 말았으면 하는 심리적인 부분을 조금씩 건드리며 무엇이 옳은 것인지 관객들도 판단해 보도록 몰입도를 높여줍니다.
 
변호사 양준호(정우성 분)는 자신의 신념을 지키고자 하지만 사회적 성공을 위해서 어쩔 수 없는 선택을 하여야 하는 그런 일반인으로 나옵니다.
 
그러나 사건을 통하여 ‘변호사의 직업윤리’와 자신의 마음속에 늘 자리잡고 있는 ‘정의’ 사이에서 갈등하며 그것을 나름대로 통쾌하게 풀어주고자 감독이 애쓴 흔적도 볼 수 있습니다.
 
이 영화 ‘증인’에 대하여 자폐증을 앓고 있는 ‘자폐아’들에 대한 이해와 접근방법을 잘 알려준 영화라고 합니다. 그런 부분도 분명 없지 않아 있습니다.
.
그러나 이 영화에서 보여준 몇몇 대사를 인용하자면 ‘밖으로 나올 수 없는 이들과 대화를 하려면 그 안으로 들어가 봐야 한다.’ 라는 등 대화나 소통이 되지 않는 경우 상대방의 입장에서 이해를 해 보아야 한다는 것을 강조하고 있으며 변호사 양준호는 실제로 증인인 임지우의 관심을 끌기 위해 그 만남의 방법과 소통의 방식을 연구하기에 이릅니다.

이것은 비단 자폐아와의 소통 방식이 아니라 우리가 일반적이라고 생각하는 사람들 사이에서도 제대로 된 소통을 위해서는 서로의 입장에서 생각해 보며 이해를 해봐야 하는 것이기에 꼭 어떤 장애요소를 가진 사람과의 소통방식이라고 볼 수 없다고 판단됩니다.
 
다만 그런 부분만이라도 우리가 ‘자폐 스팩트럼 장애’라는 것에 대한 이해와 하나의 예를 배울 수 있었다면 그것 또한 좋은 모습으로 비춰집니다.
 
극적 반전을 드러낼  때의 김향기의 연기는 보는 관객을 소름돋게 만들만큼 깔끔했기에 박수를 보내고  싶습니다.
 
영화 증인은 법정드라마 이면서 서스펜스나 스릴러 보다 지금의 사회의 불신과 법조계의 그릇된 인식 그 사이에서 벌어지는 여러가지 상황을 탄탄한 시나리오 속에  다른 무엇보다 배우 정우성과 김향기를 비롯한 모든 배우들의 연기로 잘 만들어진 영화입니다.

극장에서 보지 않았다면 조금은 아쉬웠을 따뜻한 감성 영화 ‘증인’이였습니다.
