영화를 보기 전까지 이 영화의 제목 강철비가 무엇을 의미하는지 알기 어렵습니다.

살상을 목적으로 만들어진 비처럼 쏟아져 내려오는 다연장로켓포(MLRS)의 파편들의 의미하는데요.

자료화면에서 처럼 영화의 시작을 피로 물들이며 모든 이야기의 시작이 되면서 앞으로 피비릿내가 풍길 이야기를 암시하게 됩니다.

영화속의 MLRS 는 상상속의 무기가 아닌 실제하는 무기 중 하나 입니다. 

국방부의 홍보영상에서도 소개가 되고 있는데요. 그 원리를 간단히 설명 드린다면, 하나의 모체 안에 수 많은 파편을 가진 작은 폭탄들이 가득한데, 그것이 크레모아 처럼 터져 폭발 주변을 산산조각 낸다고 보면 됩니다.

영화 “강철비”도 최근 만들어진 많은 영화들이 영감을 얻은 인기 웹툰 중 하나 입니다.

이젠 웹툰이 단순한 만화적 이야기를 넘어 자유롭게 작가의 생각을 시공간과 사상을 뛰어 넘는 표현의 장으로 여겨지게 되나 봅니다. 그 만큼 작가의 상상력을 펼치기도 좋을 뿐만 아니라 대중들과의 소통도 쉽다고 볼 수 있습니다.

남북한이 대립하는 상황에서 벌어 질 수 있는 여러가지 상황 중 하나인 북한의 내부적인 쿠테타와 현재의 북핵 위기 그리고 미국과 중국과 같은 강대국 사이에서 국익을 위한 제대로 된 결정을 내리지 못하는 한 국가의 리더들의 그릇된 권위 의식이 그대로 드러나기도 하기에 답답함을 넘어 현재의 국내의 위기 대응능력을 냉소적으로 바라 볼 수 밖에 없도록 만듭니다.

그러나 영화 강철비를 보며 가장 많은 생각을 가지게 한 것은…”다르지만…결국엔 같은 것이다” 였습니다.

엄철우(정우성)과 곽철우(곽도원)는 서로 이름이 같다고 하지만 한자로는 그 의미가 다릅니다. 그렇지만 그 둘은 방식은 다르지만 각자 선택한 방식으로 남북의 평화로운 공존을 위해 힘을 합치게 됩니다.

그리고 그 둘은 한 가정의 가장이자 자신들은 이해하지 못하는 딸을 둔 아빠이기도 합니다.

GD의 음악이 흘러 나올 때, 많은 관객들이 의아해 했습니다. 결국 이 영화도 광고를 해야 하는 것인가? 사실은 그 반대이겠죠? GD의 음악을 삽입하기 위해 저작권료를 줬어야 할 것 입니다. 맥도날드는 PPL이였을 거구요.

다시 내용으로 돌아가면, 남북의 두 딸들은 그 체제가 어떻게 되었든 그들만의 공통된 공감대가 있습니다. 바로 세계적으로 유명한 GD의 음악을 들으며 그것이 최고다 라고 생각하게 되는 것이죠.

그와 동시에 GD의 음악을 들어서는 안되는 체제에 살고 있는 엄철우(정우성)는 그런 딸이 못마땅하고 이해도 되지 않습니다. 한국의 곽철우(곽도원) 또한 그런 음악을 최고라고 생각하는 자신의 딸을 이해하지 못하는 것은 마찬가지 입니다.

여기서 우리는 세대간의 갈등을 보게 되는데요. 이런 세대간의 갈등이 바로 우리가 아직 경험하지 못하고 있는, 그러나 앞으로 극복하고 나갈 수 있는 방법을 제시해 준 것이 아닌가 합니다.

이미 이데올로기 시대에 교육을 받고 철처히 세뇌 아닌 세뇌가 되다시피한 기성세대의 관념으로는 풀기 힘든 남북의 문제가 시간이 지나고 세대가 바뀌면서 이념의 벽을 넘어 새로운 개념으로 “통일”이라는 결과에 더 쉽게 접근 할 수 있다는 것을 이야기 하고 싶은 것이 아닌가 하고 영화를 보며 필자의 나름대로의 결론에 이르게 되었습니다.

결국 영화는 가족을 사랑하는 누군가 그 행복을 지켜주기 위해 스스로 자신의 인생에서 얼마 남지 않은 시간을 희생하며 전쟁을 막아내며 끝을 내게 되는데요.

결국 우리가 평화와 통일을 바라는 것은 거창한 역사적 의미를 만들기 위해서가 아니라 바로 사랑하는 나의 가족과 또 누군가를 지키기 위해서가 아닌가 합니다.

한국인이 봤을 때, 영화의 내용은 분명히 심각한 남북의 미묘한 문제와 전쟁이라는 무거운 주제를 다루고 있기에 심각하지 않을 수 없습니다.

그러나 필자와 같이 감상을 한 외국인들이 봤을 때, 그 내용의 심오함 보다는 정우성이라는 명배우의 등장과 연기가 핵심이였습니다. 그 이유를 물었을 때 그들의 대답은….한국 사람이 미국의 중동과 관련된 액션 영화나 기타 영화를 봤을 때 그들의 미묘한 역사적, 국제적 이해관계를 이해하거나 생각하며 보느냐는 물음이 되돌아 왔습니다.

특별히 한국의 역사에 관심이 많거나 그런 분야의 일을 하지 않는다면 당연한 이야기죠.

잘 만들었고 감동적이다 라고 생각하고 우쭐한 기분에 물어봤던 질문에 당황스럽긴 했지만, 그만큼 우리나라의 현실적 문제는 결국 우리가 풀어야 할 숙제이지 남들에게 맡겨 둘 것은 아닌 것으로 보게 되었습니다. 영화에서 처럼 말이죠… 

정우성씨의 연기는 나이가 들어가며 더 훌륭하게 다듬어졌고 얼굴만으로 먹고 사는 배우가 아님을 증명해 주고 있었으며, 곽도원씨는 명배우의 반열에 오른 후 더 인간다운 면을 스크린에서 보여주고 있었습니다.

배우들의 훌륭한 연기와 더불어 우리나라의 현실을 이야기 해주고 있는 영화 “강철비”는 영화 “쉬리” 이후 남북문제를 소재로 제대로 만든 영화라고 판단 됩니다.
