[연극] 자메이카 헬스클럽 with 배우 “김권”

코로나19로 인하여 실시되고 있는 사회적 거리두기가 3단계에서 5단계로 세분화되고 1단계로 단계가 낮아진 요즘. 휴일에 거리로 나오는 사람들이 조금씩 많아지고 있는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다.

코로나19가 완전히 종식되기 전까지 어쩔 수 없이 코로나19를 늘 염두해두고 활동할수 밖에 없는 상황입니다

겨울을 알리듯 갑자기 기온이 뚝 떨어진 주말. 젊음과 공연의 거리 대학로에는 생각보다 많은 사람들이 만남을 이어가는 모습을 확인할 수 있었는데요.

지난 8월 한 때 코로나19 감염으로 황무지와 같은 상황을 맞이했던 대학로에서는 다시 연극, 뮤지컬 등의 공연이 열리고 있었습니다.

 

이번엔 대학로에서 2017년 11월 초연 이후부터 꾸준한 사랑을 받고 있는 연극 『자메이카 헬스클럽』을 보고 “김권” 배우와 함께 작품과 배우의 생각들을 들어보는 시간을 가져보았습니다.(2020.11.07)

연극 『자메이카 헬스클럽』은 제목과 인터넷의 스틸 사진들만 봤을 땐 헬스장(피트니스라고도 하는)에서 운동과 관련된 내용을 소재로 한다고 생각하기 쉽습니다.

그러나 연극의 제목이 되는 이곳 『자메이카 헬스클럽』의 이름이 왜 자메이카인지 알게 된다면 그 의미는 조금씩 다르게 다가오게 됩니다.

『자메이카』 그곳은 바로 이곳 헬스클럽의 주인인 황강봉(김권)이 가보지 못했지만 갈망하는 그런 곳(세상)이었습니다.

황강봉(김권)이 운영하고 있는 헬스클럽은 무척 힘든 경영난에 처해 있습니다. 월세, 전기세조차 내기 힘든 상황을 극복하기 위해 종업원인 최미화(백지윤)는 자포자기한 사장 황강봉(김권)과는 달리 어떻게 해서라도 헬스클럽을 정상화 시키기 위해 노력합니다.

그러던 중 갑자기 찾아온 한 때 발레리나 출신 톱스타였던 지성미(임윤서)가 자신의 옛 트레이너인 황강봉(김권)을 다시 찾아와 방송 복귀를 위하여 자신의 몸무게를 40kg대가 되도록 트레이닝을 해준다면 자메이카 헬스클럽이 정상화될 수 있도록 만들어 주겠다고 거래를 하게 되고 황강봉(김권)은 마지못해 이를 수락하게 됩니다.

이혼 후 아이와 떨어져 지내던 최미화(백지윤)은 너무 뚱뚱해져서 자신을 알아보지 못했던 아들에게 보다 더 좋은 모습의 엄마가 되기 위해 살을 빼고 “스피닝”대회에 나가 우승을 하고자 합니다.

지성미(임윤서)를 연애계에 데뷔 시켰던 정관재(정대현)는 지금은 운동기구 회사의 영업사원으로 일하고 있지만 지성미를 다시 톱스타로 만들어내기 위해 이들과 함께 합니다.

이렇게 극중의 각 캐릭터들은 자신들이 처한 현재 상황을 코믹하게 그러나 시간이 갈수록 과거의 모습과 현재를 비교해가며 애잔한 이야기를 들려주고 극중 인물들에 대한 관객들의 공감을 얻어내고 있습니다.

이렇게 극중 인물들이 헬스클럽에서 운동을 하는 데에는 저마다 이유가 있었습니다. 단지 건강이나 살을 빼고 예뻐 보이거나 멋진 모습을 위해서가 아니였습니다.

극중 인물들의 과거의 이야기를 통해 『자메이카 헬스클럽』 그 곳에는 사람들이 살아가는 각자의 삶의 이유가 있었으며 그 삶의 목적을 위해 나아가는 과정을 만들어가는 공간이었습니다.

마지막으로 보여주는 배우들의 스피닝 퍼포먼스는 연극을 보는 동안 보여주었던 감정들을 해소하는 카타르시스였습니다..

2020년부터 새롭게 선보이고 있는 『자메이카 헬스클럽』은 이전 공연과는 달리 새롭게 각색되어 관객들을 맞이하고 있었는데요. 내용적인 면에서 조금 더 현실성 있게 그리고 진행에 있어 조금 더 빠른 전개를 통하여 관객과 감정적 거리를 좁히고 있었습니다. 그래서인지 100분의 시간동안 지루할 틈을 주지 않았습니다.

연극이 끝난 뒤. 황강봉役의 김권 배우와 연극과 배우의 생활에 대한 짧은 인터뷰를 가져보았습니다.

김권 배우는 지금 출연중인 『자메이카 헬스클럽』 뿐만 아니라 최근 작품으로는 『6시퇴근』을 통하여 관객들과 소통하고 있으며, 연극 뿐만 아니라 TV드라마 『호텔델루나』에서 작가役을 『청춘기록』에서 감독役으로 나오며 점점 그 활동영역을 넓혀 나가고 있습니다.

또 올해 2월에는 연극 “6시 퇴근”에 함께 출연한 어여쁜 배우 허윤혜씨를 아내로 맞아 행복한 신혼생활을 하고 있습니다.

연극 『자메이카 헬스클럽』이 공연된 대학로의 『외유내강씨어터』는 그렇게 큰 극장은 아닙니다. 그래서 관객과의 거리가 매우 가깝고 배우들은 마이크 없이 공연이 진행됩니다.

대사를 함에 불편함이나 힘든 부분에 대한 물음에 김권 배우는 “일반적으로 배우들은 평소 발성 연습과 호흡이 기본으로 되어 있어 마이크 착용으로 인한 부담보다 오히려 더 편하게 공연을 할 수 있었다.”고 전하였습니다.

『자메이카 헬스클럽』은 헬스클럽이 소재이기 때문에 연극 중간에 운동을 하는 모습이며 마지막 스피닝 공연같은 운동을 하기 때문에 다른 공연보다 더 힘들어 보이기도 합니다. 운동을 하는 부분이 어렵지 않냐는 질문에 김권 배우의 경우 “공연에서 운동하는 것보다 공연전 연습을 하는 과정이 더 힘들었지만 지금은 익숙해져서 괜찮다”고 합니다.

타인을 연기하는 직업을 가진 만큼 공연이 끝난 뒤 실생활엔 어떤 영향을 주게 되는지 궁금했는데요. “인물에 몰입하다 보면 무대 밖에서도 어느 순간 그 인물의 행동이나 말투가 나도 모르게 갑자기 튀어 나와서 당황하기도 합니다. 많이 알려진 것처럼 톱배우들이 극중 인물에서 빠져나오지 못해 많은 어려움을 겪는 경우가 소개 되는데, 저는 아직 그 정도는 아닌 것 같습니다.”라며 배우들이 맡은 인물에 대한 몰입에 관한 내용도 들려주고 자신의 연기에 대해 아직도 연구하고 노력해야 하는 부분이 많다고 겸손하게 이야기 하고 있습니다.

연극 『자메이카 헬스클럽』도 이번 코로나로 인하여 공연기간 중간에 공연을 하지 못하는 경우도 생기는 등 공연업계도 많은 어려움을 겪고 있으며 김권 배우도 다른 배우들과 마찬가지로 여러가지 생활에 곤란한 상황을 맞이하기도 하였다고 합니다.

코로나로 인하여 공연이 없거나 다른 일이 없었던 시기에는 미래에 대한 불확실성과 불안으로 걱정도 많았다고 합니다.

상위 몇 퍼센트를 제외하고는 대부분의 배우들이 자신이 원하는 일(배우)을 하기 위하여 힘들더라도 여러 다른 일을 병행하며 생활을 할 수 밖에 없는 상황이라고 하는데요.

김권 배우의 경우 지금의 이런 어려운 상황을 부인 허윤혜 배우와 함께 작은 자영업을 시작하면서 조금씩 나아지고 있다고 합니다.

생활인 듯 연기인 듯, 어떻게 지나가는지 모를 만큼 바쁘고 힘든 날들이 지나가고 있지만, 생활력 강하고 긍정 에너지 가득한 부인 혀윤혜씨의 응원으로 더 힘이 난다고 말하는 김권 배우의 표정에서 행복하다라는 표정을 읽을 수 있었습니다.

김권 배우는 결혼을 하고 가장이 되어 생활을 꾸려 가는 지금, 그 동안 자신이 맡았던 그 어떤 배역에서도 느끼지 못했던 큰 책임감을 느끼고 많은 어려움 속에서도 자신을 키워준 부모님에 대한 존경과 아내 허윤혜씨에 대한 깊은 사랑을 표현하기를 아끼지 않았습니다.

무대 위의 화려함과 달리 사람들은 잘 모를 수 있는 배우의 생활.

자신이 하고자 하는 배우라는 일을 하기 위해 다른 곳에서부터 더 많은 노력을 해야 하는 것을 보여주고 있는 김권 배우와 함께한 연극 『자메이카 헬스클럽』이었습니다.
