“2차 대전 때는 일본이 미국보다 훨씬 더 강했다니까? 저렇게 미국도 삼킬려고 달라들 정도였으니까….잘 만들었네..”
“난 잘 모르겠어 지루한 부분도 있고해서 그래도 볼만은 했어….”
“저기서 젔으면 미국도 먹히고 우리도 아직 어떨지 몰라….”
“그걸 니가 어떻게 아니…!!”
 
영화 상영시간을 기다리던 중 영화를 보고 나온 커플로 보이는 남녀 한쌍이 지인을 기다리며 방금 본 영화 “미드웨이”에 대한 이런 저런 이야기를 하는 것을 우연히 들을 수 있었습니다.
 
사람의 취향에 따라 영화도 재미가 있을 수 있고 그렇지 않을 수 있기 때문에 다양한 의견들이 나오는 것은 당연합니다.
 
특히나 오늘 소개할 영화 “미드웨이”는 2차 대전의 한 획을 긋는 전쟁사에 의미 있는 기록이 된 실제 사건을 영화로 만든 것입니다.
 
그렇기 때문에 단순히 재미만을 생각하고 보게 된다면 당시 상황의 이해와 역사적 의미 등 놓치게 되는 부분도 많아지고 자칫 지루하거나 영화적으로 미흡한 부분만 찾게 될 수 있습니다.
 
미드웨이 해전을 조금 설명하자면,
 
미국과 일본 등 당시 서로가 다른 나라를 식민지화 하는 것을 용인하고 있었습니다. 서로 견제를 하던 중 일본의 세력이 팽창하게 되면서 미국과 영국 등은 일본을 견제하기 위해 석유와 철과 같은 중요한 전쟁자원의 공급을 제한하기 시작합니다.
 
당시 일본은 자신들의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 석유와 같은 자원의 안정적인 공급처와 공급로를 확보하는 것이 절실했습니다.
 
그래서 계획한 것이 미국의 태평양 전초기지가 되어 있는 하와이 진주만을 공격하여 미국의 세력을 꺾을 계획을 가지고 있었는데요.
 
바로 1941년 12월 7일 진주만을 습격하여 미국에게 막대한 군사적 피해를 입히게 됩니다.
그러나 수 많은 사상자가 발생하고 전함 등 군함들이 파손, 침몰하는 등 큰 피해를 줬지만 가장 큰 습격 목적이였던 “항공모함”은 찾지 못하고 돌아가게 됩니다.
 
훗날 이야기 되지만 진주만 습격 당시 지휘했던 “나구모 주이치”(당시 일본제국 해군 제독)는 항공모함의 전략적 중요성이나 미국의 엄청난 양의 유류저장 시설에 대한 이해가 부족하여 3차 공격을 하지 않았습니다. 진주만 습격을 승리로 간주하고 아군(일본제국군)의 피해 없이 되돌아 가는 것이 낫다고 판단한 것으로 추정되기도 합니다.
 
그러나 진주만 습격을 계획했던 야마모토 이소로쿠(당시 일본제국 연합함대 사령장관)는 미국 하버드 대학에서 공부하며 미국에서 생활해 본 경험이 있었습니다.
 
그래서 미국의 막대한 자본과 생산력이 어떤 것인지 알고 있었기 때문에 미국을 공격하라고 압력한 군국주의자들에게 ‘진주만 공격 성공 후에도 그 후 6개월이 지난 다음에는 상황을 장담 할 수 없다.’ 했다고 알려져 있습니다. 그 만큼 미국의 사회기반 인프라에 대한 이해가 빨랐던 것으로 생각됩니다.
 
진주만 공격의 승리가 안겨준 자만감은 『산호해 해전』과 미국의 『둘리툴 폭격대』가 일본 본토 도쿄를 공습하면서 일본제국은 큰 충격에 빠지게 되고 다시 야마모토 제독의 계획대로 미드웨이를 공격하게 됩니다.
 
영화 미드웨이는 이런 전투들을 모두 모아 그 전후 배경을 보여주고 동시에 물리적 열세에서도 정보전에서의 승리와 지휘관의 노련한 판단 그리고 수 많은 군인들의 숭고한 희생 아래에서 전장에서의 승리를 만들어 내는 것을 보여주고 있습니다.

이번 2019년에 개봉하게 된 영화 미드웨이는 2차 세계대전에 조금이라도 관심이 있다면 보았을 수 많은 태평양전쟁과 관련된 다큐멘터리와 영화 “도라 도라 도라 (1970)”,  “진주만 (2001년)”에서 볼 수 있는 장면들이 오버랩 되게 만들었으며 내용들 또한 종합백과사전을 연상케 할 만큼 방대한 것을 압축해 두고 있습니다.
 
실화와 실제 인물 그리고 전쟁기록을 바탕으로 그 모습들을 제대로 재현한 만큼 위에서 이야기 한 다큐멘터리나 진주만 같은 영화를 본 다음이라면 이해와 재미가 더해질 영화 입니다.
 
우선 미국이 물량의 열세에도 불구하고 미드웨이에서 승리 할 수 있었던 결정적 원인 중 하나로 『조제프 로슈포르』 같은 암호해독가의 정확한 암호해독과 그것을 신뢰하고 싸울 수 있도록 설득력 있는 주장을 펼치는 해군정보장교 『에디윈 레이튼』 소령 그리고 모든 요소를 고려하여 결정적인 한 방을 날릴 명령을 하게 되는 『니미츠 제독』의 지휘력을 뽑을 수 있겠습니다.
 
AF라는 공격 지점을 확인 하기 위하여 미드웨이 섬의 담수화 장치가 고장났다는 오정보를 흘리고 그 내용을 역이용 하여 정확한 정보를 알아낸 것은 신의 한 수 였으며 어쩌면 이제 정보전의 하나의 방법이 되어 있을 수 있습니다.
 
미드웨이 해전을 생각하면 일본의 야마모토 제독과 미국의 니미츠 제독의 바둑판으로 비유하기도 합니다. 물론 전체적인 작전과 지휘는 각 제독이 하게 되겠지만, 진정 전투에서는 그 현장의 지휘관에게 모든 것이 걸려 있습니다.
 
일본의 나구모 제독은 자신의 항모전단과 그들이 가지고 있는 정보와 승리에 대한 확신으로 미드웨이로 향하지만 이미 매복해 있던 『프랭크 잭 플래처 제독』이 이끄는 미국의 항모와 전투기들에 의해 저지 당하게 됩니다.
 
영화를 보면서 우리는 일본이 전쟁 시뮬레이션을 하는 모습과 소수의견에 대한 이해나 발언의 기회보다 어느 한 특정 권력자의 권위적인 일의 방식이 눈에 들어오는데요.
 
앞서 미국의 정보전에서 암호해독과 그 과정에 대하여 지휘관이 워싱턴의 결정과 다른 결론을 내놓은 자신의 부하와 함께 직접 암호해독반으로 들어가 실무자와 협의하고 형식보다 합리적 결론을 이끌어 내기 위한 노력과는 정반대의 모습을 보여주고 있습니다.
 
자신의 지위와 자존심 때문에 부하의 의견을 무시하고 또 승리의 자신감에 취한 나머지 부정적인것 보다 자신들이 승리만 할 수 있도록 예외적인 경우를 배제한 논리와 판단은 결국 미드웨이 해전에서 일본의 패배 이유 중 하나로 보여집니다.
 
미해군의 수 많은 전투기와 뇌격기들은 일본의 전투 경험이 많은 A6M(제로)전투기와 함대 앞에선 속수 무책으로 당하기만 합니다.
 
하지만 어느 순간 굉금과 함께 하늘에서 꽂히듯 떨어지는 돈트리스 급강하 폭격기에 의해 『운명의 5분』 동안 일본은 2대의 항모를 잃고 맙니다.
 
보통 2차 세계대전의 급강하 폭격기라 하면 독일의 슈트카(Junkers Ju 87 Sturzkampfflugzeug (Stuka), 융커스 Ju87 급강하폭격기)만 생각 할 수 있지만 미국의 A-24 돈트리스 급강하 폭격기의 활약은 영화를 보는 관객으로 하여금 미국에도 급강하 폭격기가 있었다는 사실을 알게 하고 또 그것에 대한 관심으로 검색을 해보게 만들기도 합니다.

돈트리스 급강하 폭격기가 태평양전쟁의 역사적인 순간을 만들어 내어 더 돋보이기도 하지만 영화에서는 급강하 폭격기의 조정사와 부조정사의 목숨을 건 임무수행과 급강하시 승무원들이 느끼게 되는 공포를 최대한 끌어내 보이기 위해 노력한 모습도 볼 수 있습니다.
 
급강하폭격기 비행전대장 『웨이드 맥클러스키』, 엔터프라이즈호 에이스 폭격기 조종사 『딕 베스트』, 신참 조종사 『브루노 가이도』와 같은 실존 인물의 실화를 토대로 더 사실감 있는 내용을 전달해주고 있습니다.

영화 『미드웨이』’는 최대한 사실에 충실하기 위한 모습을 보여주며 영화 『진주만(2001)』에서와 같은 로맨스는 보여주지 않습니다.
 
오히려 사실에 최대한 충실하며 긴박하고 절실했던 전장의 상황과 미드웨이 해전을 승리로 이끌었던 중요 인물들을 중심으로 그들이 느꼈을 전쟁의 공포와 그래도 승리를 위해 기꺼이 목숨을 내놓는 군인들의 희생정신을 최대한 나타내 보려고 애쓴 흔적이 보입니다.
 
그리고 일본과 미국이 가지고 있는 일에 대한 방식과 관념의 차이는 미드웨이 해전 중에 대비되는 내용을 통하여 당대 최고의 힘을 가진 국가간 싸움에서 결정적으로 승패를 가르는 기준이 되기도 합니다.
 
예를 들자면 앞서 얘기한 정보전과 전쟁시뮬레이션 과정에서 보았던 것 뿐만 아니라 일본의 제로 전투기는 성능도 좋았지만 조종사와 전체적인 안정성이 떨어진 반면 미국의 항공기들읜 당시로서는 뒤처지는 성능을 가졌으나 조종사의 안전과 비행기 자체의 전체적인 안정성에 중점을 둔 설계라던가…
 
항공모함의 설계나 운용에 있어서도 공격을 당할 때의 대비책 등 여러모로 대비되는 모습을 아래에 소개해 드리는 영상을 통해서도 확인 할 수 있습니다.

영화 『미드웨이』는 미국에서도 흥행에 성공하며 또 전후 세대들에게 다시 한 번 당시의 상황을 토대로 현재의 미국과 일본과의 관계를 생각하게 되는 계기를 마련해 주었을 것입니다.
 
우리나라의 입장에서도 당시 일본제국의 지배하에 식민지로 고통을 받던 기간이었으며 앞서 영화를 보고 나온 관객의 말처럼 미드웨이 해전에서 미국이 졌다면 미국뿐 아니라 전세계의 많은 상황이 바뀌었을 것이라는 것은 역사가들이 이미 말해주고 있으며 대한민국의 해방도 더 늦어졌을 수 있었을 것입니다.
 
2019년 7월 일본의 아베 신조 총리가 대한민국에 대해 수출통제 조치를 취하고 그에 대한 대응으로 대한민국은 일본 상품 불매운동이 몇 달째 이어지고 있습니다.
 
그런 시기에 맞춰 나타난 영화 미드웨이는 보는 관객으로 하여금 중요한 역사적 순간을 재확인하며 마음 속으로 일제강점기 우리의 고통 속 역사도 되돌아 보게 만듭니다.
 
미드웨이를 보면 조금은 모자라거나 과한 CG를 확인 할 수 있습니다. 많은 것을 표현해야 하고 지금은 남아있지 않은 것들에 대한 표현을 하기 위해 어쩔 수 없다고 보여지지만 『마이클 베이』 감독의 영화 『진주만』 CG와 공중전 등과 비교 되는 것은 영화를 보는 관객들의 수준이 상당히 높아져 있다는 것을 보여주고 있습니다.
 
미드웨이 해전이 영화로 만들어진 것은 이번이 처음은 아닙니다. 이미 1977년 영화로 만들어 졌으며 이 영화에는 당시 미국의 유명한 배우들이 많이 나왔고 영화에 나오는 전투장면들은 실제 전투에서 찍은 기록 영상을 많이 이용하였습니다. CG없이 있는 그대로를 보여주기 때문에 더 사실적으로 느껴지게 됩니다.

유명한 스타배우가 나오는 것도 아니고 블록버스터 영화는 아니지만 나름 재미와 감동을 주는 영화 『미드웨이』는 국내 흥행에 있어서도 비교적 좋은 성적을 내고 있습니다.
