[영문운전면허증 견본 / 경찰청]
해외여행을 준비하며 해외에서 운전을 하기 위한 준비로 국제운전면허증을 발급받아 본 경험들이 있으실 겁니다.
여권의 경우 최장 10년의 복수 여권이 있지만 국내에서 발급받는 국제운전면허증은 발급일로부터 1년간 유효하였습니다.
특히 조심해야 할 부분 중 하나는 국제운전면허증을 발급받더라도 국내운전면허증을 같이 가지고 가야만 해당 나라에서 자동차 렌트 및 운전이 가능하고 또 이런 부분에 대해서는 경찰서나 운전면허시험장에서 국제운전면허증을 발급을 받을 때면 주의사항으로 꼭 듣게 되는 내용이였습니다.
이런 기존의 국제운전면허증 발급과 이용상의 불편한 점을 해소하고자 경찰청(청장 민갑룡)과 도로교통공단(이사장 윤종기)은 지난 9월 16일부터 영국·캐나다·호주 등 해외 33개 국가에서 국제운전면허증 없이도 운전이 가능한 ‘영문 운전면허증’을 전국 27개 운전면허시험장에서 발급한다고 밝혔습니다. (경우에 따라 해당국의 요건에 따라 운전시 여권도 지참해야 함.)
영문 운전면허증은 운전면허증 뒷면에 성명, 생년월일, 면허번호, 운전 가능한 차종 등 면허정보를 영문으로 인쇄하여 해외에서도 쉽게 운전면허 정보를 파악할 수 있도록 제작되었습니다.

신설되는 영문 운전면허증은 운전면허 신규 취득·재발급·적성검사·갱신 시 전국 운전면허시험장에서 발급할 수 있으며, 면허 재발급·갱신 시에는 전국 경찰서 민원실에서도 신청할 수 있습니다.
(경찰서 민원실에서 신청할 경우 당일 발급은 되지 않으며 시간이 더 오래 걸립니다.)
발급수수료는 기존 7,500원에서 10,000원으로 상향되었습니다. (적성검사시 15,000원)
유튜버들 중에는 벌써 영문 운전면허증을 발급받는 과정을 영상으로 올린 것들도 확인되는데요.
앞으로 여행 갈 때를 대비해서 미리 마련해 두면 편할 것 같다라는 반응과 해외를 나갈 일이 없는 사람의 경우 별필요 없어 보인다는 등 자신의 상황에 따라 다양한 의견들이 나타나고 있습니다.
영문 운전면허증의 인정범위에 대해서 각 나라마다 미세한 차이가 있을 수 있으니 출국전 해당 국가의 제도를 정확하게 파악 할 필요가 있습니다.
국제운전면허증이 필요한 사람 뿐만 아니라 앞으로 신규면허증을 발급 받을 경우 일부러라도 영문면허증을 발급받는 일이 많아질 것으로 예상됩니다.
