[영화] 레디 플레이어 원

영화, 그 중에서도 SF의 거장 스티븐 스필버그가 가상현실과 게임이라는 영역에 복고를 더하여 관객들의 눈과 귀를 사로잡은 새로운 영화를 선보였습니다.

바로 ‘레디 플레이어 원’ 입니다.

개봉되기 전부터 예고편을 본 수 많은 영화 팬들의 관심을 받고 있었는데요.

실사와 게임 속 캐릭터, 현실과 가상세계의 경계를 넘나들며 정신없이 이어지는 스토리는 단지 관객들의 눈만 즐겁게 하는 것이 아니였습니다. 스티븐 스필버그는 분명 자신이 알고 있는 모든 것을 다 보여주고 싶었던 것으로 보입니다.

이미 알려진 바와 같이 등장하는 캐릭터들의 로열티가 제작비의 상당 부분을 차지하는 만큼 지금의 게임 덕후들 조차도 보지 못했거나 생소한 캐릭터나 게임의 내용들도 있습니다.

그 만큼 과거의 유물들이 신선한 자극제 역할을 하기도 하며 볼거리를 제공하고 제작자의 욕심을 충족한 것으로 보이는데요.

수 십년 뒤의 미래의 사회 모습 중 사람들이 현실을 부정하며 가상현실 속 게임을 통하여 대리 만족을 하며 살아가게 되는 모습이 우스꽝스럽게 표현되고 있지만,

조금만 더 깊게 생각한다면, 사람들이 가지게 되는 현실 세계에서의 불만들을 게임세계를 통하여 희석시키고 현실의 문제 보다 게임 속 아이템과 레벨에 더 집착하게 만들어 현실과 분리된 삶을 살아가게 하는 무서운 미래의 모습 중 단면을 보여주고 있기도 합니다.

처음 게임을 만든 제작자는 사람들에게 즐거움과 희망을 주기 위해 ‘오아시스’라는 게임을 만들게 되었지만, 제작자 자신도 누구와 잘 어울리지 못하고 사회성이 부족하여 늘 은둔하며 게임을 즐기던 것을 생각한다면,

이런 게임 자체가 즐거움과 희망이라기 보다는 게임을 통하여 스스로를 숨기고 익명성을 통하여 자신의 현재 모습과 다른 모습의 삶을 지향하는 것을 보여주고 있습니다.

결국은 가상현실은 가상일 뿐이며, 현실의 삶과 인간관계에 충실하여야 한다는 메시지도 전해 주고 있는데요.

E∙T, 쥬라기공원, 백투더퓨쳐 와 같은 수 많은 공상과학 영화의 끝에서 보여주는 가족드라마 같은 분위기도 빼먹지 않고 있었습니다.

영화를 보면 지금은 조금 낮설은 그러나 어디서 들어본 듯한 유명한 팝송을 비롯하여 게임기의 이름이나 게임이름들이 등장하게 됩니다. 지금의 10~20대 에게는 많이 생소할 수 있지만, 조금이라도 관심이 있었던 중년들에게는 과거의 향수와 이해가 더 빨랐을 듯 한 내용들도 보여 미소가 지어지기도 했는데요.

극중 등장한 IOI 집단은 필자로 하여금 디즈니의 101마리 달마시안을 떠올리게 만들지만, 영화가 끝나고 누군가는 한국의 걸그룹 I.O.I를 이야기 하고 있다는 것, 킹콩을 생각하게도 되지만 누군가는 어린시절 3인용이 가능했던 램페이지라는 게임속 고릴라를 생각 했을 수 있는 등 캐릭터나 영화의 내용이 이미 세대의 반영과 그 차이를 나타내고 있는 것 같았습니다.

한가지 아쉬웠던 점은 그렇게 많은 캐릭터들의 출연에도 불구하고 우리나라가 세계적으로 기억이 될 만한 히스토리 있는 캐릭터 하나 없다는 것 입니다.

멋진 건담 피규어는 어디서든 찾아 볼 수 있지만, 태권V는 너무나 찾기 어려운 것 처럼…

수 많은 3D 그래픽을 토대로 만들어진 영화들이 있지만, 스티븐 스필버그가 만들었기에 현실과 동떨어지지 않은 느낌으로 관객들을 영화에 몰입시킬 수 있었던 것이 아닌가 합니다..

‘레디 플레이어 원’ …  지금의 기술로도 실현 될 듯한 가상현실 속의 이야기를 토대로 2시간이 어떻게 지나간지 모르게 여러가지 볼거리와 흥미를 자극하는 영화였습니다.
