카울을 벗겨보자…!

[ 자동차의 본닛을 열어 확인해 본 자동차 카울의 모습 | 사진 : 윤선재 기자 ]
밀폐된 자동차 안으로 공기가 들어오기 위해서 가장 먼저 거쳐야 하는 통로가 있습니다. 바로 자동차의 “카울(Cowl)”이라는 곳입니다.
자동차의 카울(cowl)은 보닛과 앞유리가 만나는 부분을 가리키며 보통 와이퍼 부분이 위치해 있으며 와이퍼 아래의 덮개를 카울 톱 커버(Cowl top cover)라고 합니다.
카울커버를 자세히 살펴보면 빗물과 워셔액이 자연스럽게 흘러내려 차체 밖으로 배수를 할 수 있도록 하는 구멍들도 볼 수 있으며 내부로 공기를 유입시킬 수 있도록 공기구명도 넓게 뚫려있는 것을 확인 할 수 있습니다.
카울 톱 커버(cowl top cover)를 벗겨보면 그 아래로 물길이 나있는 것 처럼 보이기도 하며 하나의 벽을 이루고 있는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다.
그 통로를 따라 자동차로 유입되는 물이 외부로 흘러나갈 수 있는 통로가 되기도 하며 우리가 자동차 공조기 스위치를 외기로 하였을 때 표시되는 외부 공기가 유입되는 통로와도 연결되어 있습니다.
와이퍼 암이나 와이퍼 모터와 같은 부분이 고장나지 않는한 카울을 분해하는 경우는 드문데요. 이렇듯 확인하기 힘든 부분인 카울 속은 사진에서 보는 것과 같이 카울 커버 아래의 통로에 이물질이 들어와 썩거나 오랜 시간 운행으로 많은 먼지로 더럽혀져 있는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다.

자동차에서 나는 악취의 여러 원인중 하나가 되기도 하는데요. 기자가 오래된 자동차의 카울을 벗겨내고 내부를 청소한 결과 내부의 먼지를 닦은 걸래는 더 이상 사용이 불가능할 정도로 오염이 심하였고 청소 전과 후를 비교해 보면 그 차이 눈으로도 금방 확인이 될 정도였습니다.

카울의 내부 청결 정도가 운전자의 건강과 밀접한 연관을 가지게 되는 부분으로는 아무리 좋은 필터를 사용하더라도 악취의 원인을 제거하지 않는한 해결책이 될 수 없으며 카울이 모래나 나뭇가지, 낙옆 등의 이물질이 유입되는 경우 공조기 필터를 상하게 만들어 필터의 기능을 저하시킬 수 있습니다.

카울 커버를 제거하는 방법에는 여러가지 경우가 있습니다. 소형이나 중형차 일부의 경우 와이퍼를 제거해야만 카울 커버를 벗겨볼 수 있는 경우가 있고 수입차나 중/대형급 자동차의 경우 외기커버가 열리는 부분과 와이퍼 장치가 있는 곳이 따로 분리가 가능하도록 되어 있는 경우가 있습니다.
기자가 확인해 본 테스트 자동차의 경우 후자로 경우로 카울 커버를 반씩 분해가 가능하게 되어 있었습니다.
카울 커버를 열어본다고 하여 큰 문제를 발생시키지는 않습니다. 다만 지금까지 열어보지 못한 새로운 곳에 대한 걱정이 생길 수 있지만 일단 시작을 해보면 별 것 아닌 것을 확인할 수 있습니다.
다만 와이퍼 암을 분리해 내야 하는 경우에는 본인의 자동차 구조와 와이퍼의 최초 위치 등을 다른 자료들을 통하여 확인하고 작업하기를 권장합니다.
내 차의 상태는 바로 나의 건강상태와 직접적인 연관이 있습니다. 각종 DIY자신이 있는 분들은 한번쯤 도전해도 좋을 듯 합니다.
참고로 이렇게 자동차의 카울을 벗져내지 않더라도 평소 세차장에서 세차를 하는 경우 고압수를 카울의 구멍을 통하여 한번씩 씻어주는 것도 좋은 방법이 됩니다.
