“많은 기대를 품었지만 무엇을 보았는지 기억을 남기지 못하고 극장을 나오게 된다.”
 
학교에서 지구과학 같은 수업을 들으며 백두산은 휴화산이라거나 한라산이 사화산 그리고 마그마를 뿜으며 활동을 하고 있는 활화산과의 차이를 배운 기억이 있을 겁니다.
 
몇 년 전부터 백두산의 화산폭발 가능성에 대한 이야기가 뉴스를 통해 전해지며 역사에 기록된 최고의 화산폭발들과 비교되기도 하는데요.
 
이런 백두산의 화산 폭발을 소재로 한 재난 영화가 나왔습니다.
 
바로 영화 “백두산” 입니다.
 
영화 “해운대”를 통해 본 우리나라의 기술로 만든 재난영화의 가능성을 사람들이 알기 때문에 2009년 개봉한 “해운대”가 만들어진 후 10년의 시간이 흐른 지금 새로운 재난 영화에 대하여 관객들의 기대는 더 클 수 밖에 없습니다.
 
이병헌, 하정우와 같은 흥행을 보증할 대표적인 배우를 앞세워 마동석, 전혜진, 수지와 같은 배우들이 그 사이를 메워주고 있는데요.
 
백두산 폭발로 인하여 입게 될 한반도의 피해를 많은 사람들이 공감하게 될 강남 한 복판 빌딩숲에서의 수 많은 건물들이 무너져 내리는 것을 현란한 CG로 표현해 내고 있습니다.
 
영화의 배경이 되는 상당 부분이 CG로 처리 될 수 밖에 없는데요. “미스터 고(2013)”과 “신과함께”에서 CG를 담당했던 ‘덱스터 스튜디오’가 참여하고 있어 영화를 보다 보면 CG의표현 방식이 어디선가 많이 본듯한 느낌을 지울 수 없습니다.

이야기의 전개가 갑작스럽고 너무나 빠른 나머지 영화가 구체적으로 이야기 하고 싶은 것이 무엇인지 알 수 없을 만큼 영화를 보는 관객들을 정신없게 만듭니다.
 
어떻게 보면 이런 전개방식이 영화자체의 모자라는 부분을 덮어줄 수 있는 나름대로의 노하우가 아닐까 하는 긍정적인 생각도 가질 수 있습니다.
 
그러나 재난 영화임에도 불구하고 재난의 모습을 담아내는 것 보다는 배우들의 액션과 장난스런 애드립에 많은 의지를 하는 모습을 보여주고 있는데요.
 
한반도의 정치, 군사적인 문제를 조금이나마 적용시켜 위기 상황에서 우리나라가 할 수 있는 것이 무엇이며 자신의 운명을 결정할 권한마저 제대로 갖지 못하는 현실을 설명하고는 있지만,
 
‘백두산’ 폭발이 가져다주는 진정한 위험과 그런 재난을 피하고 이겨내는 과정은 제대로 보여주지 못하고 있습니다.
 
영화 초반에 자동차를 좋아하는 사람이라면 조금은 거부감이 들수 있는 장면이 연출됩니다.
바로 현대의 ‘싼타페’가 갈라지는 도로를 다른 차를 타넘고 빠져 나간다거나 쓰러지는 건물들 사이로 아슬아슬하게 피해가는 장면들인데요. 헐리우드 영화에서도 나오기도 하는 장면이지만, CG처리가 너무 눈에 띄기도 하고 PPL이 너무 과장된 것 같아 불편함을 감출 수 없기도 합니다.
 
중반 이후부터 북한의 택시로 등장하게 되는 ‘포드 몬데오’는 2005년에 나온 2세대 후기형 모델로 총알 세례를 받기도 하고 백두산 화산의 화산탄에 맞아가며 또 지하갱도에서 핵폭발이 발생해도 주인공을 잘 지켜주며 끝까지 끈질긴 포드의 생명력을 보여주기도 합니다.
 
총 한번 제대로 쏴보지 못한 폭발물 처리반(EOD)이 전술차량 한대로 화산재로 뒤덮인 북한 전역을 돌아다니며 활동하는 모습도 비현실적으로 보이는 것도 사실입니다.
 
영화를 보는 동안 정신없이 지나가는 장면들과 스토리의 전개로 생각없이 이야기를 따라가게 되기도 하지만 조금만 더 현실적이였다면 어떨까 아쉬움을 남기는 부분이기도 했습니다.
 
한국영화의 특징이면서 큰 단점으로 지적되는 억지 감동을 주고자 하는 ‘신파’는 그나마 최소화 하려는 노력을 보여주었습니다.
 
200~300억 투자해서 저런 영화 못 만들겠어(?)라는 뭔가 잘 모르는 냉소적인 사람들이 분명 있을 겁니다. 그러나 한 예로 2013년 개봉한 ‘미스터 고’라는 영화의 고릴라 CG만 해외에서 최대 800억까지 요구하였다고 합니다.
 
그래서 한국의 ‘덱스터 스튜디오’에서 자체 기술을 개발하여 만들게 되었고 그런 기술을 바탕으로 계속해서 한국영화의 CG를 만들어 내고 있다는 것을 알게 된다면 하나의 작업이 얼마나 힘들고 많은 비용이 드는 것인지 예측 할 수 있을 겁니다.

이렇게 쉽지 않은 일들이지만, 한국의 영화관객들의 눈 높이는 이미 상당한 수준으로 높아져 있는 상태 입니다. 그렇기에 CG뿐만 아니라 영화의 모든 요소에 많은 정성을 쏟아야 할 것 입니다.
 
비판을 받는 부분도 많이 있지만, 백두산과 같은 대규모 투자와 스케일이 큰 영화를 계속해서 만들어내는 것은 매우 긍정적이라고 봅니다. 좋은 영화와 그렇지 못한 영화는 분명 관객의 냉철한 판단에 입소문 나기 마련 입니다.
 
지금의 관객 동원력을 본다면 흥행을 보증하는 명배우들의 연기에 힘입어 많은 사람들이 극장으로 향하게 만드는 재미난 영화임은 분명합니다. 그러나 영화가 끝난 뒤 남겨지는 내가 본 영화에 대한 잔상이 남지않아 특별한 메시지 없는 흥미위주의 영화로 아쉬움을 남깁니다.
 
영화가 개봉되고 약 2주가 흘러가는 지금, 관객수 700만명을 넘으며 이제 흥행의 손익분기점을 향하고 있습니다.
 
 
백두산이 폭발할 경우 슈퍼화산으로 어떠한 피해를 입힐 수 있는지 아래의 영상으로 영화와 비교해 보시기 바랍니다.
