12월 21일 Netflix를 통하여 공급된 새 영화가 있습니다.
버드 박스 “bird box”
이미 알려진 바와 같이 Netflix는 자체제작이나 자신들의 사이트를 통한 독점공급 등의 방식으로 새로운 영화와 드라마 등을 선보이고 있습니다. 이번 작품도 그러한 경우인데요. 
샌드라 블록, 존 말코비치 같은 배우들이 출연하기에 영화의 퀄리티를 어느정도 보장해 줄 것으로 예상을 하고 보게 됩니다.
지난 2018년 여름 인기를 몰았던 공포영화 “콰이어트 플레이스”처럼 인간의 한쪽 감각을 버려가며 생존을 위한 필살의 방법을 찾아야 하는 내용의 영화 입니다.
“콰이어트 플레이스”가 소리를 내면 죽임을 당하는 경우라면, “버드 박스”는 눈으로 보게 되면 죽임을 당하게 된다는 설정인데요.
소리를 내지 않는 쪽과 눈을 가리고 볼 수 없는 상황에서 움직이며 살아남기 위해 발버둥 치는 모습 …. 둘 중 어느것이 더 답답하게 느껴지시나요?
분명 후자의 모습이 더 답답하고 위기감이 더 고조될 것임은 분명해 보입니다.
영화는 현재 주인공의 행동과 과거의 여러가지 정황들을 번갈아 보여주며 차츰 이러한 상황까지 오게 된 배경을 천천히 알려줍니다.
공포영화에서 늘 있는 상황들로 살기 위해 발버둥 치다가 결국 죽임을 당하거나 의견불일치로 스스로 위험에 빠지는 사람들, 살기위해 이성적인 판단을 하는 사람은 오히려 인간성이 없는 듯이 비치기도 하며, 결국 살아 남는 것은 스스로에 대한 믿음이 강한 주인공만 남게 됩니다.
앞서 비교한 “콰이어트 플레이스”는 영화를 보는 동안 관객들을 긴장상태에 몰아 넣으며 올 여름 극장가에 입소문을 타고 흥행을 하게 되었는데요.
그와 비슷한 “버드 박스”는 큰 기대를 하고 보게 되었지만, 기대했던 만큼의 긴장감이나 몰입감을 선사해 주지는 못했습니다.
상황설정과 배우들의 연기 모두 훌륭했지만, 눈으로 보지 못하는 가운데 느끼게 되는 공포와 그 상황들이 좀처럼 관객의 입장에서는 큰 영향을 주지는 못합니다.
지금 잠시 눈을 감아 보시기 바랍니다. 주변의 수 많은 소리가 귀를 자극하고 눈 앞의 불빛들이 눈꺼풀 뒤로 비치게 됩니다. 이 상황에서 자신이 몇 미터 앞을 전진 할 수 있을지…눈 앞의 커피잔을 제대로 잡을 수 있을지…그리고 눈을 뜨면 죽을 수 있는데 그 불안감을 몰아내며 지금 있는 이 곳에서 벗어나야만 한다면….거기에 귀에는 환청까지 들립니다.
영화는 이런 1인칭 시점에서의 답답함이나 공포 보다는 그 상황을 전체적으로 다 보여주면서 진정 관객에게 전달해야 하는 뭔가를 놓치고 있는 듯한 모습을 보여주고 있습니다.
영화가 끝날 때까지 그 두려움의 존재에 대한 설명이나 이해도 없습니다. 단지 추측하자면, 보이지 않는 영적인 존재가 사람들에게 환영을 보여주고 순식간에 스스로 자살을 하도록 유도하며 그 모습을 본 사람들이 죽음에 대한 공포를 가지게 됩니다.
원인을 구체적으로 드러내는 것도 조심스러운 일이지만 끝까지 알 수 없는 존재로 부터의 위협에서 살아남기 위한 사투와 그 결과 안식처에 도달한 주인공들이 왜 거기서 만큼은 안전한지 제대로 된 이해를 하기엔 영화속 내용만으로는 부족한 부분이 많습니다.
영화 “버드 박스”라는 제목 또한 영화를 보기 전과 본 후 생각을 달리하게 만드는데요.
원작인 소설에서의 새들의 역활이나 비중 그리고 그 의미가 어느 정도인지 모르겠으나, 영화만 놓고 봤을 때, 왜 제목이 “버드 박스”인지 의문이 들게하며, 공포의 대상을 감지하는 새들의 역할과 그 능력이 다시 궁금해 지기도 합니다.
영화 “버드 박스”는 이미 비슷한 부류의 영화들이 있기에 그 비교로 부터 자유로울 수 없을 것으로 보이며, 상영이 시작된지 며칠 안된 현재 이미 호불호가 확실히 갈리는 감상평들이 이어지고 있습니다.
연말 안방에서 조용히 지내고 싶은 분들이라면 한 번 보면서 나름대로의 평가를 해보시기 바랍니다.
