[영화] 콰이어트 플레이스

영상의 오리지날 사운드트랙에 녹음된 잡소리 마저도 고요한 정적을 깨는 듯 시끄럽게 들립니다.

음료수를 빨아 들이는 빨대와 사람들의 호흡소리….손으로 팝콘을 집는 소리까지도 …어디선가 지켜 보고 있을 듯 합니다.

영화의 처음부터 소리를 내면 안된는 것 처럼…극장 그 자체가 이미 ‘콰이어트 플레이스’가 되어 있었습니다.

아마 오늘 같이 영화를 보게 된 많은 관객들이 이미 예고편을 보고 왔기 때문이 아닌가 합니다.

요즘 헐리우드의 영화들은 과거의 영화의 흐름에서 완전히 벗어나 보입니다.

예전 헐리우드 영화에서는 알게 모르게 원칙 같은게 있었다고 합니다.

제일 먼저 죽는 장면엔 흑인이 그 대상이 되어야 한다거나 주인공은 죽지 않는다거나…기타 여러가지,

그러나 오늘의 이 영화 ‘콰이어트 플레이스’는 소중하고 너무 귀여운 백인의 어린 아이 부터 영화의 희생양으로 삼게 됩니다.

소리라는 것이 무엇이길래….

사실 영화를 보며 무서운 장면 때문이 아니라, 영화를 보는 관객 조차도 소리를 내면 안될 것 같은 분위기 때문에 영화에 더 몰입하고 더 집중하게 되었는지도 모릅니다.

인간의 의사소통 중에서 가장 대표적인 목소리를 내지 못하고 살아가며 주변의 어떤 소리도 그것이 흥겨운 대상이 아니라 공포를 몰고 올 불안한 징조라면 어떨까요?

소리를 들을 수 없다는 것과 소리를 내어서는 안된다는 그 답답함이 ‘콰이어트 플레이스’라는 영화 제목처럼 영화를 더 영화내용스럽게 만들어 주고 있었습니다.

무서운 공포/스릴러 영화에서 충격적인 장면 만큼이나 빠질 수 없는 것은 바로 충격요법으로 사용되는 적정한 타이밍에 귀를 자극하고 뇌로 하여금 연상을 하여 오싹하게 만드는 바로 그 ‘소리’가 아닐까 합니다.

이미 아시는 분들도 있겠지만, 알프레도 히치곡 감독의 ‘싸이코’의 한 장면을 생각한다면, 찢어질듯 한 사운드와 샤워부스를 통해 흘러내리는 붉은 핏자국이 엄청난 공포감을 가져다 주었다는 것을…

영화의 설정 자체가 조금은 억지스럽기도 하지만, 그러함에도 불구하고 몰입감이 좋았던 것은 연출자의 능력이 아니였나 생각됩니다.

아역 배우들의 연기는 아주 오래 된 영화의 한 장면에서 따온것 처럼 정형화 되어 있었지만, 그래도소리를 내지 못하는 가운데 그 공포감을 나타내기 위한 부단한 노력이 아니였나 생각 됩니다.

영화의 분위기가 어느정도 무르익어 가게 될 시간쯤 부터 뭔가 급작스럽게 변하기 시작하는 분위기에 빠져들기도 잠시…

120분 정도의 런닝타임을 생각했을 많은 관객들이 90분이라는 이 영화의 압축된 상영시간에 적응을 못하고 마지막 장면에 허무함을 나타내는 긴 탄식의 한숨을 자아내기도 합니다.

영화의 마지막, 뭐가 이렇게 끝이 나는가? 하는 정도의 급작스런 반전과 결말은 많은 관객을 당황스럽게 하였는데요.

혹자는 이러한 엔딩장면을 감독이 관객에게 많은 여운을 남기는 철저히 계산된 잘 만든 영화라고 하지만,

이러한 영화의 끝맺음을 간혹 ‘열린 끝맺음’이라는 표현을 쓰며, 결말을 감독이 내지도 않지만 관객들 조차도 자신이 원하는 결말에 어떻게 도달해야 할지 모르는 그런 장면을 연출해 냅니다.

이러한 방식은 이미 과거에도 많이 사용된 방식으로 ‘원처적 본능’이라는 영화에서 샤론스톤이 침대 밑에서 얼음을 깨는 송곳을 발견하고 집어 들려다가 돌아서는 순가….관객들은 다시 한 번 샤론스톤이 정말 범인인지 아닌지 의심을 하며 결론 없이 막을 내리게 되는데요….

몰입감은 좋으나 마지막 까지 너무 많은 기대를 하지는 않아야 더 재미있을 ‘콰이어트 플레이스’였습니다.
