우리의 선조들은 지금 우리가 사용하고 있는 바로 이 “한글”을 창제하고 이용하며 또 그것을 어떠한 경우에도 지켜내기 위해 자신의 목숨을 희생한 역사적 사실들을 우리는 익히 알고 있습니다.
 
잔혹했던 일제시대에도 나라의 독립을 이루어 내기 위하여 목숨을 바쳐 싸운 독립투사들 뿐만 아니라 안으로는 우리글 우리말을 지키기 위해 온갖 핍박을 받으며 또 목숨도 잃어가며 지금의 우리에게 소중한 유산을 남겨주신 수 많은 학자들과 많은 사람들이 있습니다.
 
영화 ‘말모이’는 이런 우리 조상들의 노력과 왜 우리가 한글, 우리의 말과 글을 지키며 이어나가야 하는지 영화를 통하여 관객들에게 상기시키고 있습니다.
 
지금 필자도 영화에 대한 설명을 하며 “우리”라는 단어를 많이 쓰고 있는데요.
 
이것도 한글이 단순한 하나의 언어를 뜻하는 것이 아니라 나와 다른 사람들과 함께 공동체 의식이 강함에서 나타나는 정체성이 강하기 때문에 쓰게 되는 표현이라는 것을 영화를 보며 다시 알게 되었습니다. 그 만큼 내 나라의 말을 쓰면서도 의식하지 못하였지만, 한편으론 무의식중에 한국인임을 그대로 드러내는 것이기도 합니다.
 
영화 ‘말모이’는 1945년 9월8일 경성역 조선통운 창고에서 발견된 2만6천5백여장의 조선어사전원고가 발견되어 최초의 국어사전인 ‘우리말큰사전’이 만들어질 수 있도록 일제강점기에 활동한 조선어학회 회원들에 대한 이야기 입니다.
 
표준어를 정하고 사전을 만들고자 하는 조선어학회 학자들의 모임에 ‘ㄱ’자도 하나 모르는 까막눈 ‘김판수(유해진)’가 우연히 잡무를 맡아 여러 어려움을 같이 헤쳐나가며 ‘말모이’원고를 완성해나가는 과정을 전해주고 있는데요.
 
영화의 전체적인 분위기는 영화를 본다기 보다 장면전환이 빠른 한편의 연극을 보고 있다는 생각을 들게 만듭니다. 그 이유는 일제시대를 표현한 그 시대의 배경들이 자연스럽다기 보다 셋트장 느낌이 물씬 풍기는 탓이기도 합니다.
 
촬영이나 준비가 잘못 되었다는 것보다는 오히려 필자가 이미 비슷한 촬영장소에 대해서 알고 있는 탓에 그렇고 그렇게 보였을 수도 있습니다. 이러한 부분은 보는 관객에 따라 다르게 판단될 것이라 여깁니다.
 
학회 대표 류정환(윤계상), 김판수(유해진) 등 많은 배우들의 연기에 대한 부담감이 그대로 전달된다고 할까요? 너무나도 무거운 주제이기도 하고 역사속에서 누군가 실제로 그러했을거라는 생각을 가지게 된다면 아마 다른 경우의 극중 인물들 보다 더 큰 무게가 느껴졌을 것이 분명해 보입니다.

대표 류정환역을 맡은 배우 윤계상은 그 시대에 학자이며 부유한 집안 그러나 친일을 하는 집안의 자식이면서 우리 말을 지켜내기 위해 창씨개명도 하지 않고 버텨내며 여러가지 고뇌에 사로잡혀 있는 인물 입니다. 불가능 했을것 같은 상황에서 회원들과 함께 사전편찬 작업을 진행합니다. 전형적인 특징 속에서 변화하는 무언가를 잘 찾아가야 하는 정말 어려운 인물이 아닐 수 없습니다.

다른 누구보다도 대본이나 영화를 만들며 염두해뒀을 김판수 역의 유해진 배우는 특유의 사실적인 행위와 해학을 보여주며 과하지도 모자라지도 않는 적절히 잘 조화된 모습을 통하여 마지막까지 깊은 감동의 모습을 선사하며 관객들에게 그의 모습을 각인시켜 주고 있습니다.
 
한 가정의 가장이지만 가장 노릇을 제대로 못하고 있던 김판수.
 
극중 조갑윤 선생(김홍파)의 소개로 학회에서 심부름을 하며 느즈막이 한글을 배우고 조금씩 공부를 하게 됩니다. 말모이 원고 작성 과정에서도 전국의 사투리를 모으는데 기발한 제치를 발휘하기도 하는데요.
 
김판수의 집안은 조금씩 안정을 되찾아 가지만, 단지 자신들만 평화롭다고 그것이 다가 아니라는 것을 깨닫고 앞으로 살아갈 자식들과 남은 사람들에게 소중한 무언가를 남겨주기 위해 희생을 감수합니다.
 
영화의 플롯은 어쩌면 뻔한 이야기 구조를 가졌다고 생각할 수 있습니다. 그러나 이 영화가 2019년 1월 겨울. 단 며칠만에 100만이 넘는 관객동원을 하고 있는 것은 분명 우리가 우리의 것에 대한 우리만의 통하는 정서가 있어서가 아닐까요? 거기에 이미 연기력들을 인정받은 배우들의 믿을 만한 연기도 보증되니까요.
 
위안부 문제와 최근 대법원의 강제징용 피해자에 대한 배상판결과 한국군함과 일본 초계기와의 레이더 논쟁이 불거지며 일본의 태도 때문에 더 관심이 가는 것이 아닐까 하는 생각도 가지게 만듭니다.   
 
평화롭게 현재를 살아가는 지금 세대가 잘 잊은체 지나가곤 하지만,
우리의 말이 곧 우리의 정신이라고 한것은 분명 각 개인이 그것을 깨닫는 순간들이 있을 것이라 여깁니다.
 
몇 천, 몇 만 단어를 외워야 하는 영어나 외국어는 사전을 찾지만 지금 SNS에 올리는 나의 글은 그 의미나 맞춤법이 정확한지 사전을 잘 찾지는 않는 것이 현실인 요즘.
 
신종어가 늘어가고 세대간의 대화의 단절이 생기고 같은 단어의 쓰임도 달라지는 것이 빨라진 요즘.
언어는 살아있는 생명체와 같다고 한 어느 학자의 글 처럼….
 
같은 말을 하는 신구세대의 세대차가 과거 어느때 보다 그 골이 더 넓고 깊어지는 요즘이지만 이 영화를 보며 느끼게 될 정서는 같을 것이라 생각 됩니다.
 
주시경 선생님 이하 우리말을 지켜내기 위해 희생하신 많은 분들께 엄숙히 감사한 마음을 담아 영화관을 나서게 되었습니다.
 
영화관에는 주말이지만 오전임에도 많은 관객이 있음을 확인 할 수 있었는데요. 그 연령층은 다양했으며, 영화의 끝무렵에는 어느 곳에서는 조용히 훌쩍이는 소리도 들을 수 있었습니다.
 
2019년의 시작. 새로운 희망과 새로운 출발을 ‘말모이’ 영화를 보며  우리 말과 글을 지켜준 많은 분들에 대한 감사도 담아보면 어떨까요?
