와호장룡으로 잘 알려진 “이안’ 감독이 메가폰을 잡고 Bad boys(나쁜녀석들), MIB와 인디펜던스데이의 “윌 스미스”가 주연을 맡은 재미 있을 것 같은 액션영화가 선보였습니다.
 
고속으로 달리는 열차 속 타겟을 정확히 맞힐 만큼 유능한 에이전시인 “헨리”는 이제 은퇴를 앞두고 있는 상황에서 자신이 저격한 사람이 테러리스트가 아닌 정부쪽 사람이라는 정보를 동료로부터 전해 듣고 마음이 심란해 집니다.
 
그러는 가운데 생명의 위협을 당하게 되고 자신을 쫓고 있는 사람이 다름 아닌 젊은 자신의 모습임을 알고 우여곡절 끝에 이런 상황을 만들게 된 동료 클레이를 찾아가게 됩니다.
 
영화는 그렇고 그런 내용을 담고 있다 보니 내용상으로는 특별히 관객들을 사로잡는 무언가는 없어 보입니다. 오히려 조금은 어색하게 엮어가는 이야기 구조가 배우들의 액션을 감상하는데 방해가 되기도 합니다.
 
“Gemini”의 뜻은 쌍둥이를 의미하며 황도 12궁 중에서 쌍둥이 자리를 의미합니다. 영화 제목의 뜻 그대로 영화 속 주인공이 쌍둥이, 더 정확하게는 자신의 유전자를 그대로 가지고 있는 클론인간을 의미합니다.
 
영화의 제목이 시사하듯 영화 예고편을 보게 된 많은 “윌 스미스”의 팬들은 20여년이 지난 옛날 Bad boys(나쁜 녀석들, 1995년 작품) 시절의 “윌 스미스”의 모습을 연상하며 뭔가 눈을 즐겁게 해 줄 내용을 기대 하였을거라 여겨집니다.

악역의 “클라이브 오웬(클레이役)”은 전쟁으로 고통받던 과거의 전우들을 생각할 때, 인간들을 대신하여 전쟁을 해 줄 대용품으로 “윌 스미스(헨리 役)”와 같이 용감하고 유능한 군인을 모델로 복제인간을 생각하며 “주니어”들을 만들게 됩니다. 
 
그는 현재의 모든 악행에 대해서 과거의 자신의 입장에서 정당성을 찾으려 하지만 결국 모두의 이익 보다 자신의 이기적인 이익이 앞선 탓에 암살과 같은 살인 등을 저지른 클레이는 용서받지 못하게 됩니다.
 
영화를 보는 동안 주인공 “헨리(윌 스미스 役)”와 복제인간 “주니어”를 동일한 인물로 보아야 할지 또 복제인간의 인격을 보통의 인간과 동일하게 생각해야 하는지에 대한 복잡한 내용도 생각해 볼 수 있습니다.
 
하지만 영화 “제미니 맨”이 이런 철학적, 사회적인 질문에 초점을 맞추고 있지는 않습니다. 그렇다보니 영화의 재미적인 요소 중에서 특별히 이것이다 할 무엇이 없다는 것이 이 영화에서의 문제가 아닐까 합니다.
 

그래도 “윌 스미스”라는 배우는 그 이름값 그 만큼 하고 있다고 보여집니다.

더불어 “윌 스미스”의 연기와 30년 전 “윌 스미스”의 모습을 재현한 CG기술은 앞으로 나올 영화들의 CG와 영화제작의 방향에 대한 무궁한 상상력을 만들어 내기도 합니다.
 
최근 나오는 거장 감독이나 헐리우드 스타들의 영화가 관객들의 기대에 미치지 못하여 큰 흥행을 하지 못하고 막을 내리는 경우가 있습니다.
 
영화 “제미니 맨”도 자칫 재미있다는 입소문 보다 그렇고 그런 정도의 영화로 머물 수 있을 것 같습니
다.
